Zero-click search
A search that ends without anyone visiting a website. Measurable on your own data, and frequently quoted with numbers nobody sourced.
Checkable · the test is below
What it means
The searcher got what they needed from the results page and did not click. Answer boxes, map packs and AI Overviews all produce it.
Why it matters for an HVAC company
Your rankings can hold while your visits fall, and the usual response is to blame the website. For a trade where the conversion is a phone call, a zero-click search that produced a call is not a loss at all, which makes this harder to read than it looks.
What would settle it
Search Console gives impressions and clicks for the same queries. Falling clicks against flat impressions and flat position is the signature. Compare it against your actual call volume before concluding anything.
A worked example
A contractor's furnace maintenance page holds position 3 across a year. Impressions rise 9%, clicks fall 34%. Calls are flat. The traffic loss is real and the business impact is close to nil, because the people who were going to call still called.
The limit on that
Industry-wide zero-click percentages are quoted constantly and sourced rarely. Your own Search Console data is the only version of this number that is about you.
