Google AI Overviews
The only one of the four engines that appears inside a search results page rather than in a chat window. That single difference decides almost everything about how it behaves and how you measure it.
An AI Overview is the summarised answer Google sometimes places above the ordinary results, with a handful of links to the pages it drew from. Sometimes. The word doing the work in that sentence is the reason most advice about AI Overviews is worthless: whether one appears at all depends on the exact wording, the device and where the searcher is standing, and a great deal of optimisation gets sold for searches that never produce one.
Check whether it appears before you pay for it
Run the exact search you care about, logged out, from the market you serve, on a phone and then on a desktop. Those two often disagree. Write down what you saw and when, because presence is volatile enough that a screenshot from last month proves nothing about today.
Commercial searches with a job attached, the ones that produce your revenue, are considerably less likely to trigger an AI Overview than the questions that come earlier in the process. A homeowner asking how long a furnace should last is a different search from one asking who can replace theirs tomorrow, and only one of those is worth optimising for this way.
Google-Extended does not control AI Overviews
This is the most common expensive mistake in the whole subject, and it costs nothing to avoid. Google-Extended is the control that governs whether your content is used for training and for grounding Gemini. It does not remove you from AI Overviews. Those follow ordinary Google indexing, which means the switch that would take you out of them is the same switch that takes you out of Google search entirely.
Contractors have been advised to block Google-Extended to protect their content and have then wondered why nothing changed in the results page. Nothing changed because the two are different systems with different controls.
AI Overviews and AI Mode are not the same surface
Google runs two answer surfaces and they get conflated constantly, including by agencies selling work against them. AI Overviews sits at the top of the ordinary results page. AI Mode is a separate conversational surface you choose to enter. They draw differently, they cite differently, and a measurement of one tells you little about the other. If a proposal uses the two words interchangeably, that is worth a question.
What the cited pages have in common
Read the pages an AI Overview links for searches in your trade and a pattern shows up quickly. The answer is usually stated plainly near the top, in a form that lifts cleanly out of the page, rather than arriving after several paragraphs of throat-clearing. The facts tend to be specific: a figure, a timeframe, a named part.
Worth being precise about what that observation is worth. It is a pattern across pages that were cited, which is not the same as evidence that writing that way earns a citation. The pages that get cited also tend to belong to sites that were already well known, and nobody has separated those two things. Write clearly because it is better writing. Treat anyone promising it will earn you a citation as having overstated their evidence. The full version of that argument is the most important page on this site.
What it does to your clicks
When an AI Overview appears it pushes the ordinary results down, and on a phone it can push the first of them off the screen entirely. Your page can hold the same position it held last year and receive materially fewer visits. If your traffic has fallen while your rankings have not moved, this is the first thing to check, and Search Console will show you the split between how often you appeared and how often anyone clicked.
Which companies measure this surface
Of the companies scored on this site, most name Google AI Overviews among the engines they cover. Far fewer say how they measure it, and none has published a dated before-and-after for a named client with the method attached. The scorecards record which is which, and the methodology explains what separates a stated method from a claim.
