Entity and schema

Organization schema for an HVAC company

The markup that tells a machine which business this is. It validates or it throws errors, which puts it among the very few things in this subject with a yes or no answer.

The fields that carry the identity

name
Exactly as it appears on your Google profile and your listings. Not a longer trading version on one and a short one on another.
address
One format, everywhere. Suite, Ste and # are three different strings to a machine reconciling records.
telephone
The number a customer actually reaches you on, matching what your profiles say.
areaServed
The towns you cover, named. This is the field most often left empty, and it is the one a local question depends on.
sameAs
Your other official profiles, so the records are explicitly joined rather than inferred. Detail here.
Service
Each service as its own entry rather than one paragraph listing them. A machine reading a list gets a list; reading prose it gets a guess.

What it does not buy

Google's own guidance is that no special markup is required for its AI features, and no engine publishes a schema type that earns a mention. Anyone selling markup as a route to being cited has overstated it.

What it does is remove ambiguity about which business you are, and ambiguity is a real, checkable problem with a real fix. That is a smaller claim and it is one that survives scrutiny.

The check

Run the page through a structured data validator. Fix the errors. Then read the output as a machine would and ask whether a stranger could tell your company from a similarly named one two towns over using only those fields. If not, the gap is usually areaServed or an address format, and both are half an hour of work.
