What it means
Rather than answering the literal question, these systems commonly decompose it into sub-questions, answer each, and assemble the result. Google has described this behaviour for its own AI surfaces.
Why it matters for an HVAC company
It means being strong on your main term is not enough. If the fan-out reaches for pricing and you publish no pricing, a competitor who does supplies that part of the answer and gets named alongside it.
What would settle it
Read the answer and count the things it told you that you did not ask. Those are the sub-questions. Do it across ten questions and the recurring ones are your content gaps.
A worked example
“Who should I call for AC repair in Tulsa” returns an answer covering 3 company names, a typical call-out fee of $95 to $150, what same-day service usually means, and a note about state licensing. Four sub-answers from one question, and only the first is the one that was asked. A contractor publishing no pricing supplies none of the second.
